Why signing Joe Gelhardt would be a brilliant investment for Tottenham
According to a report by Burnley Express, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Wigan Athletic teenager Joe Gelhardt.
However, the 17-year old talent is being targeted by a host of clubs in England which includes the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, and many others, according to Daily Star.
Meanwhile, Tottenham recently sacked long-time manager Mauricio Pochettino and appointed Jose Mourinho after a lukewarm start to this season, despite being last term’s Champions League runners-up.
And Mourinho, in his first game in charge, guided Tottenham to a well-deserved win against West Ham United. As a result, Spurs are currently placed 10th in the table.
Regardless of that win though, it remains to be seen as to how far the Lilywhites progress with the Portuguese at the helm.
Star striker Harry Kane is still the side’s top goalscorer with 6 goals but the dearth potent strikers could harm them in the longer run.
Kane is the only recognizable finisher in the side while other attackers like Son Heung-Min and Erik Lamela play in a wider role.
The Englishman is currently in his ninth year at the club and has played a vital role alongside former boss Pochettino.
With not many options upfront, Tottenham pursuing an interest in young Englishman Gelhardt seems to a smart move.
The youngster, who plies his trade in the Championship with Wigan, has played six games so far and has scored once.
He currently captains the England Under-18 side and has scored three goals in six matches.
Pochettino developed several young players into superstars at Tottenham and in his first interview as the new manager, former Manchester United coach Mourinho stated that he would also prioritize concentrating on youngsters, as claimed by Daily Mail.
Thus, Mourinho must make use of this opportunity to sign the talented teenager Gelhardt.
Spurs need to look for a back-up for Kane, who has been tirelessly doing the finisher’s job for numerous campaigns.
Verdict
The youngster would be a viable long-term investment and would not cost the club much, as he has a price tag of £5million.
