Why Leon King could be a good long-term investment for Man City
According to claims from the Sunday Mail, as cited by The Scottish Sun, Manchester City have been credited with an interest in Rangers starlet Leon King.
Liverpool and Chelsea are keeping close tabs on the 15-year-old while German Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig are also among the potential suitors for his signature in the upcoming transfer windows (Sunday Mail h/t The Scottish Sun).
King, who made his debut for Rangers’ development side at the tender age of just 14, has already played for Graeme Murty’s U20 side and was recently named on the bench for the UEFA Youth League clash against Slovan Bratislava.
The talented teenager is yet to make his senior professional bow for the Gers but his talent and potential haven’t gone unnoticed.
However, as per the report, the Gers fear that they could lose the centre-back prospect after the teenager declined a new deal to extend his stay.
With Rangers struggling to tie him down to professional terms due to his tender years, the 15-year-old could well be the next Scottish starlet to further his development elsewhere.
The Ibrox giants lost midfielder Billy Gilmour to Chelsea back in 2017 after he refused to put pen to paper on a new contract while Liam Morrison rejected a long-term deal with Celtic to sign for Bayern Munich this summer.
Besides shelling out millions of pounds to build a world-class team capable of demolishing any opposition on a given day, City have also put a lot of emphasis on their youth recruitment drive in recent times.
To put things into perspective, Leon King is still very much in the rudiments of his developmental phase as a footballer but Man City could potentially have a gem on their hands if the Scottish starlet fulfils his promise at the Etihad.
Having come through the door at City in the summer, Pedro Porro and Ryotaro Meshino currently find themselves in the club’s loan army while the likes of Morgan Rogers and Liam Delap have also adapted well to the club’s age-group sides.
Verdict
King is still very young for a centre-back, let alone for a professional footballer, and there is still a long way to go before he evolves into a finished article.
The Cityzens need to keep polishing some gems of their own if they are serious about continuing their dominance in English football in the coming years. To that end, Leon King would be yet another fantastic addition to the existing pool of young talents at the club.
King would need to come through the U18s and the U23s if a move to City does materialize in the upcoming transfer window.
