Blues sneak past the Black Cats

A solitary Cesc Fabregas goal was enough to give Chelsea a narrow 1-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

  • Sunderland 0 Chelsea 1
  • Fabregas opens scoring
  • Blues wasteful in front of goal
  • Visitors survived late charge

Match Summary

Chelsea were let down by their finishing throughout the match, but still managed to dominate most of the possession and were well worth the lead when Fabregas fired home in the 40th minute.

The Blues were almost made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal as Sunderland made a late push for an equaliser, but the visitors were able to cling on for a slender 1-0 win.

Full Report

The visitors began the stronger of the two sides, but struggled with their accuracy early on as Marcos Alonso, Willian Pedro all sprayed shots wide of goal.

At the half hour mark, neither side had managed a shot on target due to a combination of sloppy attacking and strong defensive play.

Chelsea went close in the 39th minute when David Luiz forced a smart save out of Jordan Pickford from a free kick, but he was powerless to keep them out less than 60 seconds later when Fabregas latched on to a cutting throughball before smashing the ball into the bottom right corner to put his side 1-0 up.

Deep into first half injury time, Willian almost doubled their advantage, but sent his free kick whiskers over the crossbar.

Sunderland came out firing after the break and should have been level just two minutes after the restart when Adnan Januzaj was played through on goal and he hit a powerful low drive towards the bottom corner, but Thibaut Courtois pulled of a miraculous save.

However, their resistance did not last long and Chelsea soon began to press back onto the front foot with Willian sending a fierce shot into the crossbar.

Diego Costa then squandered a golden opportunity to put the result beyond doubt when he mishit a weak shot from close range straight at Pickford.

The remainder of the second half past with very little incident until Fabregas wasted a glorious chance to add a second goal on the night as he fired a close-range shot inches wide.

The Blues were almost made to rue the miss as Jason Denayer got above his man in the first minute of second half injury time, but hit his powerful header straight at Courtois as Chelsea clung on for a narrow win.

Sebastien Larsson then found some space on the edge of the area and hit a shot seemingly destined for the top corner, but Courtois pulled off an acrobatic save to preserve his side's lead.
